Free Guide to Stress Relief With Yoga Therapy
Yoga Therapy for a Healthy Heart, Mind and Body.
Integrating Yoga Therapy for a Balanced Experience of Living
Stress is a natural part of life, but when it becomes chronic, it can take a toll on both our mind and body. As a certified yoga therapist, I believe in a holistic approach to stress relief—one that integrates body awareness, emotional release, and mindfulness. This guide is designed to introduce you to a simple, yet powerful practice inspired by the principles of Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy (PRYT), a therapeutic approach that blends yoga, psychology, and mindfulness to promote well-being and inner peace.
In this guide, you'll learn:
The connection between your mind, body, and heart in stress relief.
Practical techniques for reducing stress in your everyday life.
How to begin integrating yoga therapy into your daily routine for lasting relief.
Understanding Stress & The Body-Mind Connection
Stress affects us in more ways than one. While we often think of stress as a mental state, it also manifests physically. The body holds onto the tension created by stress in the form of muscle tightness, shallow breathing, and even digestive disruptions. Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy (PRYT) teaches that the body and mind are deeply interconnected, and by addressing both, we can create lasting relief.
PRYT integrates yoga poses, mindfulness, and breathwork to release mental and physical tension, allowing you to feel more grounded and centered. The goal is to bring awareness to your body’s sensations, thoughts, and emotions, helping you release what no longer serves you and move toward balance.
The Power of Heartset, Mindset, & Bodyset
In my yoga therapy practice, I emphasize the importance of cultivating harmony between heartset, mindset, and bodyset. These are the foundational pillars of personal well-being and stress relief.
Mindset refers to our mental framework and beliefs, including the way we perceive stress and challenges. A mindset that’s open to growth allows us to see challenges as opportunities to learn, rather than obstacles that overwhelm us.
Heartset is the emotional aspect of our being. When we’re under stress, we often forget to nurture the heart, which is the emotional center of our bodies. By learning to cultivate heart coherence, we can shift from stress to calmness, allowing us to respond to life’s challenges with compassion and resilience.
Bodyset is our physical foundation—the way we carry tension, hold stress, and respond to life physically. In my practice, we focus on releasing stored tension and learning to tune into the body’s innate wisdom.
Together, these elements help to establish a deeper connection with ourselves, enabling us to release stress and align with our true nature.
Epigenetic Memory & The Bodies Memory
Our bodies carry not just the experiences of our lifetime but also the epigenetic memory of our ancestors. This means that stress and trauma can be passed down through generations, leaving marks on our physical and emotional health. Epigenetics refers to the study of how experiences can affect gene expression without altering the underlying DNA. This means that unresolved stress or trauma from the past can influence our current stress levels.
One of the goals of yoga therapy is to help you befriend your body—to reconnect with it in a way that allows you to release inherited patterns of tension, stress, and trauma. Through awareness, movement, and breath, we can begin to rewrite the body’s response to stress and create a new, healthier baseline for our mental and physical well-being.
1. Practice Awareness: The Power of Mindful Presence
One of the first steps in managing stress is bringing awareness to the present moment. When we’re stressed, we often find ourselves caught in a spiral of worries, anxieties, and thoughts about the future. PRYT encourages mindfulness and presence in the body, allowing you to anchor yourself in the now.
Exercise: Body Scan Meditation
Find a quiet space to sit or lie down comfortably.
Close your eyes and begin by taking a few deep breaths. With each inhale, allow your chest to rise, and with each exhale, feel your body soften and relax.
Starting from the top of your head, bring your awareness to each part of your body—your scalp, forehead, eyes, cheeks, and jaw. Notice any areas of tension or discomfort.
Slowly move down your body, bringing attention to your neck, shoulders, arms, and hands, all the way down to your feet.
If you notice any tightness or discomfort, breathe into that area, visualizing the tension releasing with each exhale.
The more regularly you practice this exercise, the better you’ll become at tuning into your body’s sensations and noticing stress before it builds up.
2. Dispelling Tension: Yoga Therapy Poses for Relaxation
Yoga therapy offers a gentle, yet effective way to release physical and mental stress. Certain yoga poses help open the body and release stored tension, while breathwork can calm the nervous system.
Exercise: Cat-Cow Pose (Marjaryasana-Bitilasana)
Start in a tabletop position with your wrists under your shoulders and knees under your hips.
On your inhale, arch your back and lift your chest (Cow Pose).
On your exhale, round your spine and tuck your chin (Cat Pose).
Move between these two poses slowly, paying attention to how your body feels. Feel the stretch in your spine and notice any areas where tension is released with each movement.
Exercise: Legs-Up-the-Wall Pose (Viparita Karani)
Lie on your back and bring your legs up against a wall, keeping them straight and your feet flexed.
Place your arms by your sides, palms facing upward.
Close your eyes and take several deep breaths, allowing your body to relax into the floor. This pose helps reduce tension in the lower back and encourages relaxation.
3. Integrating Breathwork: Calm Your Nervous System
Breathing exercises are a powerful tool for managing stress. By consciously controlling your breath, you can activate the body’s relaxation response, lowering cortisol levels and reducing anxiety.
Exercise: 4-7-8 Breathing Technique
Inhale quietly through your nose for a count of 4.
Hold your breath for a count of 7.
Exhale completely through your mouth for a count of 8.
Repeat for 4 cycles.
This breathing technique is a simple yet effective way to reduce stress and improve focus.
4. Heartset: Tapping into the Wisdom of the Heart
In addition to the mind and body, there’s a third element to consider in stress relief: the heart. In Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy, we explore the concept of heartset—the emotional energy we hold in our hearts. The heart is a powerful emotional center that can guide us in times of stress, helping us shift from anxiety to calm.
Exercise: Heart Centering
Sit comfortably with your hands resting on your heart center.
Take a few deep breaths and allow yourself to feel your heartbeat.
Focus on the feeling of compassion or love. Visualize this energy radiating out from your heart and enveloping your body, bringing warmth and peace.
By cultivating a heart-centered approach to stress relief, we can learn to approach our challenges with compassion and acceptance.
5. Embrace Rest: The Power of Yoga Nidra
Yoga Nidra, or “yogic sleep,” is a guided meditation that brings your body into a deep state of relaxation. This practice is incredibly effective in reducing stress and restoring energy. It helps your body release physical and emotional tension while recharging your nervous system.
Exercise: Yoga Nidra (Guided Meditation)
Find a comfortable position lying down. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths.
As you listen to a guided Yoga Nidra session, allow your body to relax completely. Let go of any thoughts, worries, or stress, and let your body and mind rest deeply.
If you’re unfamiliar with Yoga Nidra, there are many free guided sessions available online to help you get started.
Stress relief isn’t just about managing our external circumstances—it’s about understanding and addressing the internal systems of our body, mind, and heart. By incorporating the principles of Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy into your daily life, you can develop a holistic approach to stress that promotes balance, healing, and resilience.
Remember, stress is a natural response, but it doesn’t have to control you. By bringing awareness, movement, breath, and compassion into your life, you can reclaim your peace and flow.
